The Oscar-winning film The Zone of Interest has made it to OTT in India and is currently streaming on Prime Video. In 2023, the UK, US, and Poland jointly produced the historical drama film that Jonathan Glazer wrote and directed. The film, which is based on Martin Amis's 2014 book, follows the family of Auschwitz commandant Rudolf Höss and his wife Hedwig as they reside in a house in the "Zone of Interest" adjacent to the slave camp. In the lead role of Rudolf Höss, Christian Friedel is joined by Sandra Hüller as Hedwig Höss.

Director Jonathan Glazer's unique approach to the Holocaust narrative

Glazer decided to focus on the Hösses as a family rather than the characters they inspired, and he dug deep into their history in an effort to create a film that would reveal the Holocaust killers for what they really were—mythologically evil. Critical reception was positive, with many praising Glazer for the film's experimental storyline, minimalist score, cinematography, sound design, and mood.

The Zone of Interest, which received nominations for five categories at the 96th Academy Awards, including Best Picture, won two honours: Best International Feature (the first for a non-English British film) and Best Sound. Three Golden Globes nominated the film, and it won the Grand Prix at Cannes and three BAFTAs, including Best Film Not in the English Language. The National Board of Review selected it as one of the top five foreign films 2023.

Glazer's Oscar speech and the ongoing conflict

The conflict between Israel and Hamas continued concurrently with the film's premiere. As he accepted his Oscar at the 96th Academy Awards, Glazer made a statement about how The Zone of Interest exemplifies the worst kind of dehumanisation. He claimed that as of right now, they are men who reject the hijacking of their Jewishness and the Holocaust by an occupation that has resulted in conflict for so many innocent people. As a Jewish person, he voiced his disapproval by acknowledging the dehumanisation of the "victims of October 7th in Israel" and "the ongoing attack on Gaza."

The Zone of Interest is in German, Polish, and Yiddish.
