Shobana, an actor who works primarily in Malayalam cinema, rose to prominence and acclaim in the 1980s and 1990s. She debuted as a child artist in Mangala Nayagi. She bagged her first National award for Best Actress for her performance in Fazil’s critically acclaimed film Manichitrathazhu, which has since been remade in several languages - Bhool Bhulaiyaa (Hindi), Chandramukhi (Tamil), Rajmohol (Bengali), and Apthamitra (Telugu).

She received her second win for her role in the Revathi-directed English language film, Mitr, My Friend. An accomplished Bharatnatyam dancer, she founded her own dance school, Kalipinya in 1989. She has received fourteen Filmfare nominations for Best Actress, across various Southern languages, winning twice. She was bestowed with the Padma Shri in 2006. Her last Tamil film appearance was in Kochadaiiyan, way back in 2014 and Malayalam being 2020’s Varane Avashyamund.
