Michaela Coel Delivers An Inspiring Speech To Writers

Becoming the first Black woman to win the Emmy for Outstanding Writing for a Limited Series, Movie or Drama Special, Michaela Coel accepted the award with a beautiful speech for writers. She encouraged them to write the stories that scared them, and the stories that come to them in the silences. She ended her speech by dedicating her show I May Destroy You to all survivors of sexual assault.

The Ted Lasso Cast And Crew Does The Roy Kent Cheer Backstage

Ted Lasso swept the comedy categories this year and the cast and crew did an impromptu Roy Kent cheer from the show during their backstage interview.

The Schitt’s Creek Cast Reunites

Annie Murphy, Dan Levy, Eugene Levy and Catherine O’ Hara reunited to present the Emmy for Writing for a Comedy Series. It felt like having a little extra time with the Roses for fans of Schitt’s Creek, as they bickered amongst themselves about Eugene pissing off the writers room and being responsible for a blank teleprompter.

Conan Trolls Television Academy Chairman

When the Chairman of the Television Academy took the stage to deliver his address, there was a burst of laughter a few seconds into his speech. The howling and clapping grew as the camera spotted comedian and late night host Conan O’ Brien who was saluting him in exaggerated irony.

#EmmysSoWhite

Even as the Academy nominated a record number of people of colour this year, all the major acting categories were won by white actors. Major upsets included Mj Rodriguez and Billy Porter for Pose – they were both counted as solid contenders for their lead performances in the final season of the FX drama. Mj Rodriguez’s nomination was historic – becoming the first trans actor to be nominated in the Best Actress in a Drama category. No Black directors were awarded this year too, and the Emmys maintained their record of no Black female directors winning in the major genre categories. As the telecast was hosted by Black people and the presenters included many people of colour, the contrast in the winners being overwhelmingly white was even more apparent this year.
