The Tattooist of Auschwitz stars Jonah Hauer-King as the young Lali Sokolov, who is the eponymous tattooist of the Auschwitz concentration camp, while the older Lali is portrayed by Harvey Keitel. Anna Próchniak plays the beautiful, young woman Gita, who becomes the anchor for Lali’s tortured soul, and he became the same for her.
The limited series will also narrate the story in two layers in a non-linear manner, with a present-day, octogenarian Lali struggling to recount the painful memories of his arduous love story in one of the world’s most horrendous places and a younger Lali struggling to survive it together with Gita.
After arriving at Auschwitz, Lali was soon made one of the camp’s tätowierer or tattooists, who was tasked with etching the arms of prisoners with identification numbers. It is while working that Lali and Gita cross paths and fall in love with each other at first sight. But if only it were so easy.
Life was hell in concentration camps, especially Auschwitz, with murder and rape being the entree and torture and experimentation being the dessert served. Despite being constantly guarded by volatile Nazi SS officer Baretzki, portrayed by Jonas Nay, Lali and Gita become determined to survive and keep each other alive.
