After the brilliant, nail-biting ride that was Squid Game, Netflix has another K-drama, The Silent Sea, lined up for its global audience. The former proved to be one of the most-watched non-English series on the platform, which means that expectations from the latter are higher than ever. Read on to know more about the series:
Choi Hang-Yong is the director, while the writer is Eunkyo Park whose credits include Bong Joon Ho’s film, Mother. Actor Jung Woo-sung is the executive producer.
From the looks of the trailer, The Silent Sea is set in a future that's not so far away. The official logline shared by Netflix reads: "Set in a future Earth that has undergone desertification, The Silent Sea is the story of the members of a special team sent to secure a mysterious sample from an abandoned research facility on the moon."
According to Collider, the series is based on a short film The Sea of Tranquility, written and directed by The Silent Sea director Choi Hang-Yong.
Bae Doona portrays astrobiologist Doctor Song Ji-an who joins the team, determined to uncover the truth behind an accident at the now-abandoned Balhae Base research station on the moon. She is known for her roles in the Netflix original series Kingdom and Sense8, as well as the critically-acclaimed series, Stranger.
Gong Yoo (Train to Busan, The Age of Shadows, Kim Ji-young: Born 1982, Guardian: The Lonely and Great God) plays Han Yun-Jae, the exploration team leader who must carry out a crucial mission with limited information. Yun-Jae puts the safety of his team members above all else and does not refrain from putting himself in jeopardy to do so.
Lee Joon (Father is Strange, Lucky) takes on the role of head engineer Captain Ryu Tae-Seok who was an elite member of the Ministry of National Defense, but volunteered for this dangerous mission in an attempt to escape the stifling environment at the Ministry.
Other cast members are Heo Sung-Tae (who played the gangster Jang Deok-su in Squid Game) and Kim Sun-young (Crash Landing on You, Reply 1988).
The series will premiere on Netflix on December 24.
