Mammootty was named the Best Actor in this year's Kerala State Film Awards. The actor, who clinched the award after competing with the young artists, chose to remain silent about his achievement. He didn’t express happiness or gratitude in front of the media.

While all the other awardees shared their responses through different media platforms, Mammootty’s silence was noteworthy.

The reason for Mammootty’s silence was an enigma, but the actor has now sent word out through his friend, producer Anto Joseph. Anto said, “A dear one has left, so it is no time for us to be celebrating.”

Anto was referring to the demise of former Kerala chief minister Oomen Chandy, who passed away on Tuesday. The announcement of awards, which was scheduled to be done on Wednesday, was postponed due to the death of the popular politician.

Mammootty, who paid his respects to Chandy at Kottayam, later joined the sets of his new film, Bazooka, in Kochi. The actor was on set at Nedumbassery when the awards were announced. After completing the shoot for the day, he headed directly home without making any public appearances.

The only thing that Mammootty has had to say about the award was when he thanked his contemporary, Mohanlal, who wished him and other winners on his Facebook page.

Mammootty has been reinventing himself through his selection of movies. While his films Rorschach and Bheeshma Parvam turned out to be box office hits, Nanpakal Nerathu Mayakkam and Puzhu were acclaimed for their content and performances.

In Lijo Jose Pellissery’s Nanpakal Nerathu Mayakkam, for which he won the Best Actor trophy at the Kerala State Film Awards, the superstar plays a grumpy theatre artist named James. The film was screened at the International Film Festival of Kerala before its theatrical release. Bankrolled by Mammootty through his production house, Mammootty Kampany, the film also bagged the award for Best Picture.
