The Matrix Resurrections trailer opens with Neo (Keanu Reeves) back in the matrix, having reverted to his Thomas Anderson persona, forgetting his past and his exploits as Neo. Flashbacks of life outside the matrix appear to him via dreams, and he asks his therapist (Neil Patrick Harris, a caricature of the woke) if he’s crazy. “We don’t use that word in here,” he replies.
Neo, now on a steady diet of blue pills, runs into Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss) at a coffee shop, but has no memory of ever having met her. She doesn’t remember him either, but there’s a hesitant spark of recognition between them. He accepts the red pill from an unidentified character (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II) and decides to trust another (Jessica Henwick) who asks him to follow her. The illusion begins to come apart and Neo and Trinity team up once more.
Elements from earlier installments recur, including a white rabbit (this time as a tattoo), black cats and a fight at a dojo. “After all these years, to be going back to where it all started,” says a third unidentified character (Jonathan Groff) at the end. “Back to The Matrix.”
Directed by Lana Wachowski, who co-wrote it with James McTeigue and Grant Hill, the fourth intallment of The Matrix series will release in theatres and on HBO Max on December 22.
