Amazon’s adaptation of J. R. R. Tolkien’s epic fantasy novels has finally unveiled its full title. The series is titled The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, which Amazon Prime Video revealed in a title announcement video on its official social media handles.
The minute-long video opens with glimpses of a fog laden mountain range which seems to be Mordor, the evil Sauron’s abode. As viewers see lava flow through the mountain’s ridges, a noice starts to narrate the story of the rings of power and how they were distributed among the inhabitants of the realm- the elves, dwarves, humans and Sauron. In Peter Jackson’s films, the story of the same was narrated by elven royal Galadriel(played by Cate Blanchett) in the first film’s prologue.
The upcoming series will follow the story of events that take place thousands of years before that of the film trilogies. The series explores several storylines in addition to the events that led to the formation of the 20 titular rings, which include Sauron’s rise as the Dark Lord, the story of the kingdom of Númenor, and of the alliances between people and elves.
The upcoming series has J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay as its showrunners and executive producers. The show’s cast includes Sir Lenny Henry, Morfydd Clark, Peter Mullan, Joseph Mawle and Robert Aramayo. The project was announced back in 2017.
The upcoming series follows filmmaker Jackson’s two film trilogies based on Tolkien’s works- The Lord of the Rings trilogy and the prequel film series The Hobbit.
The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power will premiere on Amazon Prime Video on September 2 this year. New episodes will drop on a weekly basis every Friday.
