If there is one show that has held us all in a chokehold as we eagerly await a new season, it has to be The Last of Us Season 2. The makers have ensured that the buzz around the show remains strong, constantly giving fans something to talk about. As we've already heard, the second season—led by Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey—is set to be tragic and heartbreaking. But the biggest question remains: how many more seasons are left before we bid the show a final goodbye, considering it is based on a limited game? Now, Craig Mazin has confirmed how long the show will continue and whether they plan to extend it beyond the games.
For the uninitiated, Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann have co-created The Last of Us for Max. The show, starring Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey in the lead roles, is based on the game of the same name. According to Pinkvilla, Craig recently confirmed at an event that they have no plans to extend the show beyond the game’s story and will remain faithful to the source material. This means The Last of Us could conclude with Season 3, or at most, Season 4.
“No, Neil and I really are focused on telling the story that's there, and it will come to an end, whether it is in season 3 or season 4,” Mazin, 53, explained. “I’m not sure how I can top this. So if there’s more or less of this to happen, other people will carry it forward. And I’ll go make tiny, tiny little things—two people talking in a warm room.”
The second season of The Last of Us is set to premiere on HBO on April 13, 2025, with the episode Future Days, and is expected to conclude on May 25, 2025, with its seventh and final episode. Officially announced on January 27, 2023, the season will adapt portions of the 2020 video game The Last of Us Part II and will consist of seven episodes.
While the wait for The Last of Us Season 2 is getting tougher and 2025 seems too far away, Craig Mazin recently teased in an interview with Deadline that, while the new season is based on the second game, it will also feature unseen stories. "As a fan, I'm thrilled that there might be a third Last of Us game," Mazin said, further fueling speculation about the show’s future.
"As the co-creator of this television show, there's no world where we would want our show to go beyond the source material that people have in the world. Our show, as people know it on HBO, is going to cover the material from the second game and then quite a bit of material that is relevant to that story. But, as I said, it also wanders down interesting new paths—unseen stories that were not told within the context of the game’s material," he added.
According to Production Bulletin, The Last of Us Season 3 is already in development—even before the makers have confirmed the release date for Season 2. The studio is reportedly working on the pre-production of Season 3, and the cast, including Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey, is set to begin filming in the summer of 2025. This means they will be back on set for the third season in roughly six months, which is an exciting update for fans. However, no further details about the third season have been revealed yet.
