The Last Of Us Season 2 is just around the corner and now Craig Mazin, the showrunner, has clarified if he would like to return for branching this world out.
Will There Be The Last Of Us Spin-Offs?

In this world of growing franchises and multiple parts for everything being envisioned, Craig Mazin has been one of the choosiest filmmakers who has not delved into creating shows and movies just to grow an IP. The creator who gave us the widely popular Chernobyl has been one of the most respected filmmakers in the streaming circuit. The Last of Us happened to be his next outing after the limited series about the Chernobyl disaster. Based on the game, The Last of Us stars Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey in the lead. Now, as we move on to season 2 and know that this is a finite show with an already chalked-out storyline, the hunger for more than what is in the games is evident. But is Craig Mazin hungry for more?
Created by Craig Mazin with the creator of the game Neil Druckmann, The Last of Us follows the two games of the same name that are out. The show is set to follow the same storyline and not go beyond what the source material has to offer. However, there have been discussions on how The Last of Us as a streaming franchise can grow into spin-offs and prequels. But Craig is not ready to do that. As per his latest comments, the filmmaker will only stick to the show until the second game is covered and will not be associated if there are more sequels and spin-offs for the show planned. Talking to Variety about the same, Craig Mazin said, “As far as additional source material, as a fan of The Last of Us, Neil has more games, I would love it. For me, as a writer and showrunner, this is my Last of Us. So this will be the last of my Last of Us, covering the events of the first and second game. I think there's always a world where you could see additional material, like the way House of the Dragon has thrived after the conclusion of Game of Thrones. And I could certainly see myself being somebody that the people making that show, they pick up the phone and call me and say, ‘How did you do this? Or what do you think about this?’ But it won't be mine to do. Somebody else will be handling that.”
For the uninitiated, Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann have both created The Last of Us together for Max. The show that stars Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey in the lead is based on the game by the same name. So now, as per Pinkvilla, Craig at an event recently confirmed that they will not be telling the story of the show beyond the games and will be sticking strictly to the source. And that means The Last of Us could end with season 3 or, at maximum, with season 4.
“No, Neil and I really are focused on telling the story that's there, and it will come to an end, whether it is in season 3 or season 4,” Mazin, 53, explained. “I’m not sure how I can top this. So if there’s more or less of this to happen, other people will carry it forward. And I’ll go make tiny, tiny little things. Two people talking in a room, in a warm room.”
The second season of the television series The Last of Us on HBO is set to premiere on April 13, 2025, with the episode "Future Days", and is expected to end on May 25, 2025, with its seventh and final episode. Officially announced on January 27, 2023, the season will adapt portions of the 2020 video game The Last of Us Part II and will consist of seven episodes.
