Even after almost a year since the film's release and many debates later, The Kerala Story, starring Adah Sharma, is still a part of many discussions. The movie is in the news again after it recently aired on Doordarshan. The fact that it was given a green signal to air on the channel even after all that it was accused of led to another discourse, and people did not welcome the movie. Now, religious leaders from Kerala have criticised the Sudipto Sen directorial, calling its screening an attempt to create divisions in society.
According to the Hindustan Times, on the eve of Eid-ul-Fitr celebrations, Imam VP Suhaib Maulavi addressed the faithful at the popular Palayam Juma Masjid located in Thiruvananthapuram. He spoke about how The Kerala Story is an attempt to divide society, and the screening of the same was a part of this attempt. He also warned people not to become tools in the hands of those who spread hatred and lies.
"Such movies are propagating things that are completely baseless. I have only one thing to tell those people who screen such movies... We should not become tools in the hands of those who spread lies," he said. “Art should not be something that creates division in society; on the other hand, it should persuade people to live a harmonious life,” he added.
In addition to Imam VP Suhaib Maulavi’s comments, prominent Islamic scholar Hussain Madavoor also spoke during the sermon. He stated that there is no love jihad in the country as claimed by the movie. These comments come after the Idukki Diocese included it as a part of an intense training program for teenagers, leading to a massive discourse across Kerala.
Written and directed by Sudipto Sen and produced by Vipul Amrutlal Shah, The Kerala Story stars Adah Sharma and is about alleged brainwashing and forceful conversion. It addresses alleged love jihad in the state and how several girls have fallen prey to it. Stay tuned to OTTplay for more information on this and everything else from the world of streaming and films.
