Crazy Star V Ravichandran’s next big release is The Judgement, a courtroom drama directed by Gururaj Kulkarni, who’s produced Last Bus and directed the thriller Amruth Apartments. The film’s teaser was released recently, which, besides providing a glimpse into what is in store as far as the story goes, also revealed that it would be in theatres in May. While a date has not been announced, our best guess is that it will release in the second half of May, most likely, on the 24th or 31st, which gives them enough time to plan promotions.

'Ravichandran's character is like Mohanlal in Neru'

While it was known that Gururaj was presenting a courtroom drama, the teaser that came out felt a tad bit like Mohanlal’s Neru, which came out last December. Directed by Drishyam maker Jeethu Joseph, Neru was also a courtroom drama that pitted Mohanlal against Siddique and his daughter, played by Priya Mani. In The Judgement, it is Ravichandran against Lakshmi Gopalaswamy. Gururaj admits that at first look it may seem that The Judgement has Neru vibes.

“In terms of character, Ravichandran may resemble Mohanlal in Neru, but the Malayalam film focused more on the emotional element of the story, than the legalities, while The Judgement has both emotions and thrills. Ravichandran’s character is like the Lincoln Lawyer. He will not stand by and let an innocent person be punished. And yet, because of a certain judgemental attitude, he makes an error and sends an innocent guy to jail. This is a guy who is misunderstood by others, simply because he drinks, dances with girls, etc. That is Diganth’s character,” explains the filmmaker.

During his research into the subject, Gururaj realized that the Indian legal system does not allow for a prosecutor to turn to defence. “When the prosecutor realizes his error and decides to right his wrong, he can’t do it himself and needs to employ someone as the face of the defence team. How he works towards freeing Diganth is what The Judgement is all about,” he adds.
