The Gray Man: Russo brothers are ‘big Dhanush fans’, elaborate on actor’s role in Netflix movie

Dhanush's debut Hollywood film The Gray Man has piqued the interest of his fans ever since the first look was released by Netflix recently. The movie is based on Mark Greaney's novel of the same name.

During a Twitter space session on Tuesday night hours after the trailer release, director duo Joe and Anthony Russo opened up about the actor’s role in the movie after proclaiming themselves as his “huge fans.” They even suggested the possibility of Dhanush’s character having a standalone movie if the audience response is positive enough.

Dhanush will be seen as an assassin in the movie that also stars Ryan Gosling, Rege-Jean Page, Jessica Henwick, Wagner Moura, Alfre Woodard, Julia Butters, Eme Ikwuakor, and Scott Haze.

“We wrote this role specifically for him. He's a sort of classic badass character who shows up to combat the hero and complicate the film. He's a fun character. He's unique. Dhanush has a great presence on camera, and the character is almost mystical. The intention is if audiences like this film, we expand out the storytelling from here, and this is a fascinating character to move forward in that world,” said Joe.

The Gray Man may mark Dhanush’s Hollywood debut, but this is not the first time he has starred in an international feature. In 2018, the actor was seen in the English-French comedy The Extraordinary Journey of the Fakir.

Besides this Russo brothers directorial, the actor’s upcoming projects include the romantic comedy Thiruchitrambalam, which will release in cinemas on July 28. He is also set to star in director Arun Matheswaran’s untitled action adventure movie.

The Gray Man is set to release on Netflix on July 22.
