The world of action movies is one of the most adrenaline-pumping and thrilling spaces to be in. The ones that are rewarding always hold a special place in our hearts, and there's no way we are letting them fade from public consciousness. One such action franchise that is supremely entertaining even at its weakest is The Expendables. A group of mercenaries, all played by massive Hollywood stars who are also some of the finest action heroes we've seen worldwide, come together to give us a franchise so good that we keep waiting for the next film from the moment we leave the cinema hall. The popularity the franchise enjoys is immense and well-deserved. For those wondering where to watch the franchise, it streams on Lionsgate Play, accessible through your OTTplay Premium subscription.
Returning to The Expendables, the franchise so far includes massive names like Jason Statham, Sylvester Stallone, Dolph Lundgren, Jet Li, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Bruce Willis, Mel Gibson, Harrison Ford, Wesley Snipes, and many others. These names alone should give you an idea of the level of action to expect from the movies. Today, we are revisiting The Expendables franchise as we sort for weekend binge-watching and will tell you about the best scenes from the films.
The Expendables 4 is a different beast in itself and deserves a separate article to scale the scenes. So, this listicle will include the 5 best scenes from the first three films that you should watch closely. Read on and add the franchise to your watchlist right now.
The first The Expendables could be seen as an experiment, with the makers trying to understand what kind of action would bring audiences to the edge of their seats. The third act of this rather decent movie was a banger in itself. There was so much happening in that tunnel where the mercenaries were about to fight the enemies. The chaos reaches its peak as we see Barney fighting with Paine and Caesar blowing up the massive gun. But wait, nothing even comes close to what Jason Statham and Jet Li have in store for us as they fight a henchman and kill him brutally.
The Expendables has taken us back to the old-world charm of action adventures in a commendable way. Jean-Claude Van Damme was a part of the second movie, playing the villain aptly named Villain. The sarcasm was at its peak as was the fight between Villain and Barney. The scene is so well-shot that it has brilliant recall value.
Imagine a moving prison, which is a train, containing Barney’s old friend Doc who needs to be saved. This scene also serves as Wesley Snipes' introductory moment as he enters the franchise as the very mysterious character, Doc. Barney and the team enter the moving prison, save Doc, and their mission is successful. But wait, this is not it. Doc takes control of the train, drives it towards his would-be prison, crashes the train into it, and destroys it. The visuals in this scene are spectacular.
Remember the chase sequence in The Expendables 2? The enemy army is chasing Barney and his team, and they now need a solid backup plan to save themselves. But who knew these guys actually had a seaplane? As they try to take off, the plane literally blows up a bridge that stands in their way. This scene has a fanbase, and rightly so.
When there are so many action stars in one movie, how can you not have them pitted against each other? Dolph Lundgren in a scene from the first film fights Jet Li in a very cinematic battle that fans still remember to this day. These were two different fighting styles merging in one scene, executed by two very talented actors.
