Bollywood actor Kunal Kapoor who made his debut in the blockbuster movie Rang De Basanti continues to amaze us with his unique choice of roles and films. The star was recently seen in the series The Empire which streams on the Disney+Hotstar. He received overwhelming responses for his portrayal of the character Babur, according to him, he hasn’t received since Rang De Basanti.
While speaking to indianexpress.com, Kunal talked about receiving instant feedback due to the advent of social media and his character. He said playing the role of Babur for the web show was a new challenge and while emperors and kings have often been shown as authoritative and commanding, the interpretation of the character that he essayed is quite different. He said that the character he played is very insecure, unsure and indecisive about the throne. “He is constantly falling apart and needs the women in his life to put him together and show him the right way,” the actor told the portal.
The series is based on Alex Rutherford’s book series Empire of the Moghul, so Kunal chose to take notes from the book and the script for research. It is clear that even though Babur is the king, it's the women around him that run the show. “This is a character who is not really in charge of his destiny. It is not about his genius or his brilliance, it’s just about some things falling in place and other people taking the right decisions for him,” Kunal shared.
While discussing the gender constructs in our society, Kunal said when it comes to women, no matter how good they are at their profession, they will still be judged based on how good they are at doing household chores and in keeping and maintaining personal relationships. And we agree with the actor.
