The musical, coming-of-age film is gut-wrenching yet inspiring tale of survival and sisterhood. The Color Purple, the musical, will follow the novel closely, exploring the strong bond between sisters Celie and Nettie against all odds. Elder sister Celie bears it all, the abuse and rape of their father Alfonso and the pain of being pregnant twice and having her children snatched from her by their evil father.

After Celie is married off to Mister, a local farmer, who is even more abusive and controlling, her life spirals further downwards. Celie still keeps her sister safe, first from Alfonso and then from Mister, till it is no longer possible as the latter sends her away and cuts all contact between them. It is much later, after enduring years of trauma and abuse that Celie gets a chance at living again, thanks to an unlikely sisterhood.

Set in the 20th century, Celie’s friends comprise of Shug Avery, a showgirl and her husband’s mistress, Sofia a vibrant, fierce young woman who gets broken by the system’s abuse before triumphing, and her sister Nettie, who never gave up on her and now resides in Africa. Now it is up to Celie to gain courage and fight against the years of oppression, rebelling to finally revel in respect and freedom.
