Blumhouse's upcoming supernatural horror film The Black Phone has been pushed to Summer 2022 for a release. The screen adaptation of the 2004 short story of the same name by Joe Hill, is helmed by Scott Derrickson. Though the reason behind the delay is unclear, the move is likely to limit the movie’s competition. Reports suggest it may have to be up against Warner Bros’ biopic Elvis now with the new release date.
Set in the '70s, the plot revolves around the abduction of a young boy by a serial killer called The Grabber. The boy gets trapped inside a soundproof basement with nothing but a disconnected phone. The storyline progresses as he finds something interesting, with which he tries to get himself out.
It stars Mason Thames, Finney Shaw, Ethan Hawke, Madeleine McGraw, Jeremy Davies, and James Ransone among others. While Hawke will be seen as The Grabber, Thames will be on the shoes of the young victim.
Derrickson, who is known for his films like Sinister and Marvel’s Doctor Strange, has co-written the film as well. He announced The Black Phone shortly after his departure from Doctor Strange, and the initial date was set to be on January 28, 2022.
The movie received high acclaim from critics after it premiered at Fantastic Fest in September, which has added to the much excitement of the fans. Now that the release date has been pushed to June 24, 2022, audiences have kept their fingers crossed.
Meanwhile, Blumhouse’s latest project is not the first one to have its release delayed. There have been a number of films lined up, whose releases have been pushed ahead for reasons that are not yet known.
