The franchise world continues to expand, which is fitting given that it started with The Big Bang Theory. CBS has officially greenlit a Young Sheldon spinoff, which will follow Sheldon's elder brother Georgie (Montana Jordan) and his fiancée Mandy (Emily Osment) as they bring up their young family in Texas. The original series was a prequel to The Big Bang Theory. After closing negotiations, the project, ongoing since January, was expected to receive a straight-to-series order.
The new sitcom will be a part of CBS' 2024–25 programming and will have Steve Holland, Steven Molaro, and Chuck Lorre, who executive produce Young Sheldon. Producers include Warner Bros. TV, where Lorre has worked for several years.
With the spinoff's pickup, Lorre will have a series on CBS for 22 consecutive seasons, beginning with the 2003 debut of Two and a Half Men. The show will be multicamera instead of Young Sheldon's single camera. Both Bob Hearts Abishola, Lorre's other current CBS comedy, and Young Sheldon are now airing in their final seasons.
Lorre, Molaro, and Holland stated, referring to their work on both Young Sheldon and The Big Bang Theory, that the world of the Cooper family has been incredibly special to them. They are thrilled to carry on with their stories as seen through Georgie and Mandy's eyes.
CBS Entertainment president Amy Reisenbach added that it has been an honour to spend the last seven years with Sheldon and the Cooper family, and now this wonderful journey will continue with Georgie and Mandy. Montana and Emily have brought relatable and touching stories to life, and Chuck and both Steves have done an excellent job of developing these characters. They have entertained fans of all generations, and they can't wait for what's to come in this cherished universe.
The streaming platform Max is home to the original The Big Bang Theory, and Lorre and Warner Bros. TV are working on a spinoff for the show. They are withholding information on that project.
In addition to NCIS: Origins, a prequel that follows a younger version of Mark Harmon's character, and Watson, a medical drama that is similar to Sherlock Holmes and stars Morris Chestnut, CBS has ordered a spinoff of The Young Sheldon for the 2024–25 season. The network will also air the revival of Matlock, starring Kathy Bates, and the multicamera comedy Poppa's House, both of which were ordered to air in spring 2023 but were shelved due to labour strikes that occurred last year.
