The way the DCU is moving forward is no less than a wild ride. James Gunn has been busy shaping Superman, and we have seen enough behind-the-scenes pictures already. But while DCU prepares for a launch, there is also DC Elseworlds that is proceeding in the background. Both Joker and Matt Reeves-Robert Pattinson’s The Batman universe exist on this side of the universe. However, the latter has been branching out well into many spin-offs, and The Penguin is one of them, with a recently released trailer. But The Batman fans now have some sad news making its way to them, and it is not going to be easy to digest at all. As per the latest update, the Arkham Asylum show, a spin-off to the Matt Reeves film, has been canceled by the studio.

Arkham Asylum Cancelled

Yes, you read that right. After a lot of reshuffles in storyline, plot, and showrunners, it was in 2022 that it was finally announced that The Staircase fame Antonio Campos had been tapped to develop Arkham Asylum, with Matt Reeves overseeing the development as the executive producer on the show. His involvement made sense because The Batman is his brainchild. But the latest news now says it isn't happening. Read on to know everything you should about the same.

As per a Variety report, the Arkham Asylum spin-off series for The Batman has been canceled at Max and is no longer happening. However, what is strange is that no reason for the cancellation has been given in the report. It rather acts optimistic as it is mentioned we might end up getting a different show along the lines of Gotham. Meanwhile, one should remember that two filmmakers had dropped out of the project because of creative differences. The makers are yet to reveal the reason behind this new drastic decision.

The Chaotic Making Of Arkham Asylum

It was in July 2020 that the show first came into the limelight. It was said to be set inside the Gotham City Police Department and was being developed by Terrence Winter. However, Winter bid adieu to the show because of creative differences sometime later. This led to the studio finding a new lead in Haji creator Joe Barton, who was in charge of the untitled show which was being compared to FOX’s Gotham. This did not work for Joe either, and he also walked away due to creative differences.

However, the studio then confirmed that they were not going ahead with the Gotham PD idea, and that was scrapped. This was confirmed by Matt Reeves, who then announced that they were working on a show based on Arkham Asylum as shown in his film The Batman. The series was said to be based on Joker and The Riddler’s budding friendship. But things began to get even more confusing when James Gunn confirmed that Arkham Asylum was still alive after he took over the DCU but would be set in the new DCU.

It was said that James Gunn would use Arkham Asylum to introduce many of the DC villains that will eventually make it to his iteration of Batman, which brings with it The Brave and The Bold. But with Arkham Asylum now being canceled, this changes everything. Only Gunn can throw some light on this chaos now.
