In 2021, award-winning filmmaker Baragur Ramachandrappa and actress Hariprriya had collaborated on their second film after Amruthamathi. This time around, Ramachandrappa decided to adapt his novel Kasturba vs Gandhi for the big screen, and present an exploration of the life of Kasturba Gandhi, from childhood, though her years as Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi’s wife, until the very end. Hariprriya was to play Kasturba, while Kishore was roped in to play Gandhi.
The film, Thayi Kasthur Gandhi was screened at a few film festivals but then skipped a theatrical outing. It has now come on OTT, albeit on transactional video on demand (rental only). As of March 28, Thayi Kasthur Gandhi is on the store of Amazon Prime Video, where one can rent it for the payment of Rs 349. The film is unlikely to be moved from the store to free viewing for subscribers.

In an earlier interview with OTTplay, Hariprriya, who has three distinct looks in the film, in keeping with the title characters advancing years, had said that Thayi Kasthur Gandhi is Ramachandrappa’s interpretation of her life. While Kasturba Gandhi gets fleeting mentions in films and other screen adaptations of Gandhi, Ramachandrappa’s film only focuses on her, her relationship with Gandhi, their family, dynamics with the children, her involvement in the freedom struggle, among others.
The film, Hariprriya had said, will establish that Kasturba was not a silent spectator in Gandhi’s campaigns. “She voiced her point of view and spoke up about the right and wrongs of their undertakings,” said Hariprriya, adding that Kasturba had several conflicts with Gandhi. “Gandhi was always about activism, while the family man in him took a backseat. She, on the other hand, had to balance being wife to him and mother to their children, while also supporting him in their social endeavours,” the actress added.
