The much-awaited teaser of Tamil superstar Vikram's upcoming movie Thangalaan was released on Wednesday. In the little over 90-second promo, Vikram's appearance is nothing short of extraordinary. To borrow from the viral meme, Vikram is just looking like a wow!

The teaser gives a glimpse of director Pa Ranjith's vision that promises to offer a cinematic experience unlike anything seen before in Tamil cinema. Thangalaan seems like a purely visceral experience offering us fresh and nuanced perspectives on the freedom struggle against British imperial rule.

The setting of Thangalaan carries an air of surrealism and mythology. While the movie seems to tell a familiar tale of the oppressed group rising in revolt against its oppressor, there's something novel about the movie's visual and narrative style.

For example, the characters in Thangalaan seem to have some magical powers. In a chilling moment in the teaser, a venomous snake sinks its fangs into Vikram's Thangalaan. However, Thangalaan remains unfazed, he mindlessly grabs the snake and ripes it in half like it's no big deal. It's literally a superhuman feat. Does he have some supernatural powers that could survive such poisonous reptiles?

Malavika Mohanan plays a key figure within the tribal community. In the teaser, her character, seemingly dressed for battle or some special occasion, unleashes a powerful, sonic scream.

It is safe to assume that the main plot of Thangalaan revolves around a vast land area with deep veins of precious gold stones. And this treasure trove seems to bring enemies from the outside, soon evolving into internal strife for power and gold.

Besides Vikram and Malavika, the film also has Parvathy Thiruvothu and Harikrishnan in the supporting cast.

Thangalaan is due in cinemas worldwide on January 26, 2014.
