Three major releases are lined up to capitalise the Independence Day weekend on August 15. They are Thangalaan, Raghu Thatha and Andhagan

With Tamil cinema having experienced a dry spell for over six months now, there seems to be a light at the end of the tunnel, with some of the most expected films getting release date one by one. While Dhanush-starrer Raayan is set for release on July 26, the industry is already preparing for the clash of three films on August 15 for Independence Day. Vikram and Pa Ranjith’s film Thangalaan, Prashanth’s Andhagan, and Keerthy Suresh’s Raghu Thatha is all set to hit screens on the same day.

Thangalaan is an upcoming period actioner directed by Pa Ranjith. The film is headlined by Vikram and also stars Malavika Mohanan, Parvathy Thiruvothu, Pasupathy and others. Thangalaan is said to be a take on the origins of Kolar Gold Fields. Produced by Studio Green, Jio Studios, and Neelam Productions, the film has music scored by GV Prakash Kumar. The technical crew consists of Tamil Praba serving as the co-writer and Kishor Kumar cranking the camera. Selva RK has worked on the editing of Thangalaan. The post theatrical rights of the film have been bagged by Netflix. Thangalaan will be released in Tamil, Hindi, Malayalam, Kannada and Hindi.
Andhagan is the remake of the critically acclaimed Hindi film Andhadhun. The Tamil remake of the black comedy film stars Prashanth in the lead role, along with actors Simran, Priya Anand, Karthik Muthuraman, Samuthirakani, Yogi Babu, Urvasi, KS Ravikumar, Vanitha Vijaykumar, Leela Samson, Poovaiyar, Manobala, and others appearing in prominent roles. The film revolves around a blind pianist who becomes a prime eye witness of a murder committed by an affluent house wife. Andhagan is directed by Prashanth’s father and actor Thiagarajan.
This film will be headlined by Keerthy Suresh and is touted to be a comedy entertainer. Backed by Kannada banner Hombale Films behind the hit Kannada franchise KGF and Salaar, Raghu Thatha will be their maiden Tamil production. The film is directed by Suman Kumar who has also written it. The film also stars MS Bhaskar, Ravindra Vijay, Devadarshni, Jayakumar, Rajeev Ravindranathan, Anandsami, Rajesh Balachandran, Ismath Banu, Aadhira Pandilakshmi, Janaki, and Chu Khoy Sheng.
