Given the unprecedented response that the re-release of Ghilli has managed to generate, Tamil superstar Thalapathy Vijay's popularity seems to have peaked in Tamil Nadu. The 20-year-old movie is enjoying a dream run, outshining several newly released movies.
Ghilli has taken over cinemas across Tamil Nadu, with many theatres selling out even during weekdays. The craze among fans of this film has left many stakeholders speechless. According to reports, in the last five days, the re-release of Ghilli has earned a whopping Rs 17.5 crore from its worldwide ticket sales.
According to the collection breakdown provided by Cinetrak, Ghilli has earned more than Rs 12 crore in Tamil Nadu alone. The film's distributor, Sakthivelan B of Sakthi Film Factory, expressed surprise over the response. In an interview, he revealed that tickets for "Ghilli" were sold at heavily discounted prices as it is an old movie. He claimed that if the film's tickets had been sold at normal rates, based on the number of footfalls across theatres, it would have earned nearly Rs 30 crore in Tamil Nadu alone.
Sakthivelan met with Thalapathy Vijay in light of the grand success of Ghilli and requested him to continue making movies.
Speculations are rife that Thalapathy Vijay will quit acting in movies for good after completing his next project, Thalapathy 69, to dedicate his full time to developing his political career.
Ghilli has brought a lot of cheer to the embattled theatres in Tamil Nadu, which were going through a dry spell due to the lack of exciting new movies. Many much-awaited movies have been postponed owing to the Lok Sabha elections.
Even though Ghilli is widely available on streaming platforms, it has managed to draw audiences to theatres. The film is now streaming on SunNXT, Aha Tamil, and OTTplay Premium.
