The anticipation is building up among the fans of Tamil superstar Thalapathy Vijay with reports about his blockbuster movie Ghilli getting ready for a worldwide release once again.
Producer AM Rathnam recently confirmed that plans are underway to digitally spruce up the movie to screen for a new generation of audiences. Initially intended for a re-release coinciding with Vijay's birthday last year, the plan was delayed due to other commitments. However, Rathnam assured that this year, the digitized version of Ghilli will hit screens worldwide.
Ghilli, set to turn 20 this year, originally premiered on April 16, 2004, and quickly became a sensation, solidifying Thalapathy Vijay's position as a top star in Tamil cinema at the time.
Ghilli is the official Tamil remake of Telugu hit Okkadu (2003). Filmmaker Dharani wrote and directed the blockbuster drama, which went on to become a milestone film in Vijay's career.
In Ghilli, Vijay plays a modern-day swashbuckling hero saving a damsel in distress. While the story may sound familiar, Dharani's fast-paced screenplay, pulsating actions and terrific performances from Vijay, Trisha and Prakash Raj made it arguably a bigger hit than the original Telugu version.
The movie narrates the tale of Velu, played by Vijay, a carefree kabaddi player, who is inadvertently drawn into a dangerous adventure involving a powerful gangster. He beats up Muthupandi, played by a wonderful Prakash Raj, a gangster with deep pockets and great political influence, to free Dhanalakshmi (Trisha) from his clutches. And thus begins a high-stake cat-and-mouse change between Velu and Muthupandi, spectacularly played out on the streets and terraces of Chennai.
The highlight undoubtedly remains the electrifying kabaddi sequences, choreographed with precision and flair. The film's music, composed by Vidyasagar, complements the fast-paced narrative. Particulary, the dance number Appadi Podu from the movie became a worldwide sensation at the time.
With the re-release culture receiving a strong response from the movie buffs, Ghilli is likely to set a new commercial record. The movie also stars Ashish Vidyarthi, Dhamu, Mayilsamy and Janaki Sabesh in the supporting roles.
Ghilli is now streaming Aha, OTTplay Premium , and Amazon Prime Video.
