Superstar Rajinikanth, who is basking in the success of his recent outing Jailer, has begun work on his next. The film, which is tentatively being referred to as Thalaivar 170, is directed by TJ Gnanavel of Jai Bhim fame. The buzz is that the official launch of the film is happening today. The film stars Amitabh Bachchan, Manju Warrier, Fahadh Faasil and Sharwanand. Music is by Anirudh Ravichander.
Thalaivar 170 marks Amitabh Bachchan and Rajinikanth's comeback onscreen after a span of three decades. The last time the duo starred together was in the super hit Hindi film, Hum (1991). The action crime drama, helmed by Mukul S Anand, had Amitabh Bachchan and Rajinikanth playing brothers, who are separated due to circumstances.
TJ Gnanavel had last churned out the social drama Jai Bhim, which attained cult status in Tamil cinema, due to its heartrending portrayal of discrimination meted out against the marginalised communities by the Tamil Nadu police. A scene from the film even made it to The Oscars' YouTube channel in the segment, Scene at the Academy. Jai Bhim was bankrolled by Suriya's own production house, 2D Entertainment and Amazon Studios.
Thalaivar 170 is bankrolled by Lyca Productions and the production house made an official announcement about the same on its social media handle. They wrote on their social media handle, "We are feeling honoured to announce our next association with “Superstar” @rajinikanth for #Thalaivar170 Directed by critically acclaimed @tjgnan Music by the sensational “Rockstar” @anirudhofficial (sic)."
Meanwhile, Rajinkanth's Jailer is out all guns blazing at the box office. The latest we hear is that the film has minted Rs 525 crore since its release and is nearing Rs 600 crore. The team recently had a success celebration along with the technical team, in which Rajinikanth, Jailer director Nelson Dilipkumar and music composer Anirudh Ravichander were all present. Jailer is bankrolled by Sun Pictures.
