Thalaivar 171: It's official! Rajinikanth teams up with Lokesh Kanagaraj for Sun Pictures

Sun Pictures on Monday announced a new project with Superstar Rajinikanth, which has been tentatively titled Thalaivar 171. The new project will be written and directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj. Composer Anirudh has also been roped in for the project. 

This announcement comes after months of speculation surrounding Lokesh's collaboration with Rajinikanth. Recent reports of the project's potential shelving may have prompted the filmmakers to issue an official confirmation, putting an end to all rumours.

Thalaivar 171, the most-awaited project of 2024

Lokesh has become one of the most sought-after filmmakers in Indian cinema in a very short span. His storytelling skills seem to deeply resonate with the masses. Last year, he delivered Vikram, which became one of the biggest hits in Kamal Haasan's career spanning over five decades. 

Known for his efficient work pace, Lokesh reportedly has plans to commence filming in February 2024, with an aim to release the movie during the next Deepavali.

Rajinikanth is basking in Jailer's success 

Sun Pictures and Rajinikanth recently tasted a massive success with Jailer. The movie became the second biggest earner in Tamil cinema with Rajinikanth's 2.0 retaining the top position with over Rs 650 crore in ticket sales.

Jailer managed to set new records by raking in a whopping Rs 600 crore in less than four weeks after its theatrical release. 

Thalaivar 170 is in the works

Rajinikanth will next join the sets of Jai Bhim director TJ Gnanavel . The project Thalaivar 170, will be bankrolled by Lyca Productions. And it's now in the pre-production. 

We don't have much information about the project's current status, besides a few unverified speculations.

Lokesh Kanagaraj is now busy with the post-production work of Leo , which stars Thalapathy Vijay in the lead. The movie is due in cinemas on October 19.
