There are a few unusual trends in Telugu cinema that can't merit much justification. For instance, the Malayalam classic starring Suresh Prabhu, Mohanlal and Shobhana, Manichitrathazhu was dubbed into Telugu back in 1993, while it's well known that Rajinikanth starred in its blockbuster Tamil remake Chandramukhi a few years later. As strange as it sounds, the Tamil film was again dubbed into Telugu with the same title and was a super hit as well. Two versions of the same movie in the same language were released across a decade and no one batted an eyelid. We may witness something similar with Vijay Sethupathi, Trisha's romance 96 as well.
96, originally made in Tamil, was a sleeper hit due to terrific word-of-mouth among the public and of course, fantastic storytelling and performances. The film was eventually remade in Telugu by the same director, Prem Kumar, as Jaanu, where Sharwanand and Samantha reprised the roles played by Vijay Sethupathi and Trisha. While 96 is currently streaming on Sun NXT and Jio Cinema, Jaanu is available on Amazon Prime Video. Now, a Hyderabad based media agency Mango Media Entertainments Pvt. Ltd has bought the Telugu dubbing rights of 96 and may release it directly on OTT soon.
The media agency has already aired a few sequences from the movie across their YouTube channel and has received good responses from crowds. Although one may wonder what purpose does the dubbed version serve now, Telugu fans of Vijay Sethupathi and Trisha can savour the original version of the film in their native language. It's believed that the Telugu dubbed version of 96 may either release on Amazon Prime Video or YouTube soon. For those who wish to experience the bliss of first love on their small screens and the stellar performances of Vijay Sethupathi and Trisha again, this is good news.
