Tanu Weds Manu was a successful romantic comedy starring Kangana Ranaut and R Madhavan. Following the film's success, Aanand L Rai took the franchise forward with Tanu Weds Manu Returns in 2015. As of today, the filmmaker believes the franchise demands a part three. In a recent interview with News18, Aanand stated a solid reason as to why Tanu Weds Manu 3 needs to be made. Hint: It has something to do with R Madhavan and Kangana Ranaut's characters in the film.

Aanand L Rai told the publication that he has plans to take the Tanu Weds Manu franchise forward with a third installment. The director believes it is a kind of franchise that demands a part three. "The reason being, those characters are so beautiful, and they were played so beautifully by Madhavan and Kangana. Those characters became a little bigger than the story itself."

For the uninitiated, Madhavan was seen as Dr Manoj Kumar Shama while Ranaut played the character of Tanuja Trivedi in the movie. As for Aanand, he further revealed there was no plan to make a franchise out of Tanu Weds Manu. The director stated its sequel was only decided after the success of the 2011 film.

"Tanu Weds Manu was wrapped very well. The story was complete. But the characters were eager to come back. That’s why we were able to create another story," he added. Rai also said he will start working on Tanu Weds Manu 3 once he has a great story that the film's characters deserve.

What does Aanand L Rai look for in a story?

The filmmaker revealed that he looks for a unique man-woman relationship in a story. He said that the dynamics in Tanu Weds Manu were different from Raanjhanaa, just as the Dhanush-Sonam Kapoor Ahuja film was different from Atrangi Re. "In Tanu Weds Manu, I showed a girl who drinks and smokes, and as a director, I didn’t judge her—and that’s why my audience didn’t judge her," stated Rai.
