The world of Dune has now touched almost all the movie nerds from across the world, even if they haven't read the books. This world of Arrakis and the rest of the places on their map is one of the most revered ones because the drama that it brought together riding on that gigantic Sandworm is insane. What is even more insane is that there is a prequel show in the making about the history of the sisterhood we saw in the two films titled Dune: Prophecy.
What do you want that is wilder than all of that combined? The fact that Tabu, the legendary Indian actor who has given some of the most majestic characters to Indian cinema, is now a pivotal part of the series. The fact that the Variety report used the word ‘recurring’ before her character on the show makes us even more excited. This means she is not just another cameo but a massive substantial part of the show.
But the update for many is confusing because they are not aware of what the buzz is all about. Why is Tabu joining a Hollywood franchise making people lose their calm (in a good way)? For all those clueless, we have got you covered today as we discuss everything about Dune: Prophecy, its origin, the cast, a scrapped title, and why Tabu joining the series means a big leap for her and Indian cinema. Read on to learn everything you should know about the same.
Denis Villeneuve made a film franchise out of the novellas of the same name written by Frank Herbert. The first film starring Timothée Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson, and Zendaya in the lead was a massive success, enabling a sequel. But it doesn't stop at a sequel, because Warner Bros. greenlit a prequel show later, which was earlier titled Dune: The Sisterhood and later changed to Dune: Prophecy. Post-release of Dune, the curiosity was, of course, around the customs of this new world, the idea of the chosen one, and how Paul Atreides will rise now as he is out there in the wild with no backing. But the intrigue was equal around the Bene Gesserit and it turns out the makers chose to commission a show around the mysterious women from the Dune Universe.
There are no specific details out as of yet, but reports earlier have confirmed that Dune: Prophecy will be set 10,000 years before the events of the Frank Herbert novellas. It will be centred around the Harkonnen family. Particularly, the show will follow the Harkonnen sisters Valya and Tula as they form the all-women clan with a mystique running in their nature called the Bene Gesserit and they together will fight the danger that stands against humankind.
It is said that the show is based on the book Sisterhood Of Dune by Brian Herbert and Kevin J Anderson, which is also a prequel to the original Dune books. The book centres around the rise of the Bene Gesserit from the Sisterhood of Rossack. The same has been confirmed with the reports that came out recently.
Tabu, who is set to return to the West after over a decade with Dune: Prophecy, plays Sister Francesca, who is set to bring tension with her to the capital, with the balance of power shaking with her entry. Strong, intelligent, and alluring, Sister Francesca leaves a lasting impression in her wake. Once a great love of the Emperor, her return to the palace strains the balance of power in the capital, reads the official description.
Now also starring Tabu, Dune: Prophecy stars Emily Watson, Olivia Williams, Johdi May, Travis Fimmel, Sarah-Sofie Boussnina, Mark Strong, Chloe Lea, Josh Heuston, Jade Anouka, Edward Davis, Faoileann Cunningham, Aoife Hinds, Shalom Brune-Franklin and Chris Mason. With Alison Schapker serving as the only showrunner now, Anna Foeratar is the executive producer alongside Alison. Anna has directed multiple episodes of the show. Diane Ademu-John has co-developed the show and also serves as the executive producer.
The show was greenlit long ago and has gone through a lot of changes in the cast and the backend team ever since. The show is set to release in the late months of 2024. However, there is no confirmation of the release date yet. Whether the makers are able to meet the deadline or not is a mystery only the studio can solve.
