The latest episode of Dune: Prophecy features Tabu—the series based on Frank Herbert's novels and films. The actor claims that in the original title, Dune: Sisterhood, women—including director Anna Foerster—had significant on-screen and off-screen roles.

Tabu on women's empowerment in the entertainment industry

In an interview with BBC Asian Network, Tabu expressed that experiencing a sense of surroundings, empowerment, and control is truly delightful. The actor attributes this trend to her observations within her home sector as well as in foreign productions. Women are now the focus of attention in many parts of the world, thanks to a global shift. The remarkable achievements of the women she collaborated with partially motivated this major shift. They are in command of their art; they have a firm grasp. From Tabu's perspective, their expertise lies in managing people effectively. That is the result of age, years of experience, and hard work throughout their lives. That was reassuring, as it made her feel secure and understood.

For Indian fans, Tabu's inclusion in Dune: Prophecy was a welcome change from the usual male-dominated science fiction. Even if her schedule allowed her to play Sister Francesca, the opportunity to act in a new setting with a diverse international ensemble was enticing. The actor always enjoys these types of experiences. The reason for her enjoyment is that she does not reside in that realm.

Tabu reflects on her international film experiences

According to her, the fact that individuals from Germany, Serbia, Spain, the United Kingdom, and Ukraine were participating enriched her understanding of diverse cultures. It was thrilling, and it certainly raised the stakes both on and offscreen. It was a privilege to meet individuals from all around the globe.

Throughout her many decades-long acting career, Tabu has appeared in numerous Western films, including Life of Pi and A Suitable Boy. Despite her accomplishments, the actor insists she will not dwell on the past. If she dwells on the past, she feels as though she has made mistakes. There are moments when she feels like she is just starting out and has a lot to learn. The overwhelming amount of affection and respect Tabu received from people or her audiences is the one thing for which she is immensely thankful and overwhelmed.

Tabu's approach to playing complex characters

She claims that the characters she plays, like Francesca, continue to inspire her. She believes she should engage with this character in a unique manner. It is her responsibility to provide the audience with a fresh take on this character. With a history spanning more than a century, people have been able to witness performers and characters come to life on screen.

Tabu emphasizes that she saw the role as an opportunity to deepen her self-discovery, acknowledging the uniqueness of acting as a live experience, devoid of a fixed workspace. On a film set, actors must continue to explore their own identities, express themselves freely, and limit themselves to a single tool. Personally, the actor examines it closely.

Dune: Prophecy is currently streaming on JioCinema (OTTplay Premium) in India.
