The year 2022 saw a plethora of content being consumed by the audience. Some made us sit on the edge of our seats with its gripping cliffhangers, twists and turns, many others made for the perfect weekend binge watch. As it's almost curtains down on the year, here are the top 5 web series in Tamil that rocked in terms of popularity.
Suzhal - The Vortex
Created by Pushkar and Gayatri, this crime thriller, directed by Bramma and Anucharan, is set in the fictional town of Sambaloor. When a teenager goes missing, it tears the social fabric of the town and the investigation into the cans opens a can of worms. The series stars an ensemble cast including Aishwarya Rajesh, Sriya Reddy, Kathir, Aishwarya Rajesh, Radhakrishnan Parthiban and Elango Kumaravel to name a few. The series set in the backdrop of Mayana Kollai, streamed on Prime Video with audio and subtitles in over 30 languages.
Vadandhi- The Fable of Velonie
This mystery crime thriller helmed by Kolaigaran director Andrew Louis had SJ Suryah and Laila making their web series debut. The plot revolves around the murder of a young woman, whose death is exploited by a novelist and a news editor. SJ Suryah plays an unrelenting cop who gets obsessed with the investigation. The show, which streamed on Amazon Prime and got a grand release, delves into the sociological aspects of the society where truth crawls and lies fly (Unmai nadakkum, poi parakkum).
Vilangu
This ZEE5 crime thriller set in the rural backdrop of Trichy, revolves arounds a police officer, who is unable to strike a balance between his personal and professional life. And when a jewellery theft, headless cold-blooded murder and a headless decomposed body is found back to back, things only excarcerbate. The series had Vemal, Bala Saravanan, Munishkanth, RNR Manohar, SS Chakravarthy, Reshma Pasupuleti and Ineya as part of the star cast. Vilangu was a sleeper hit and the line 'Kicha nale Ilichavayan thane' became so popular that there was a huge demand for a spinoff of his character.
Tamil Rockerz
While the aforementioned shows delved into murder investigations, Arun Vijay's maiden web series Tamil Rockerz helmed by Arivazhagan had the actor playing the supercop Rudra, who tracks down a bunch of people running the nefarious website that leaks films before their release. The plot is based on the piracy website Tamil Rockers and the eight-episode series streamed on Sony LIV. The star cast also includes Vani Bhojan, Ishwarya Menon, Vinodini Vaidyanathan, Vinod Sagar, Azhagam Perumal and Marimuthu.
Pettaikaali
Pettaikaali by Aha is the first Tamil web series based on the bull taming sport Jallikattu. Kalaiyarasan played the protagonist Pandi in the series, who is a jallikattu player. The series, directed by Raj Kumar, a former assistant of director Vetri Maaran (who has also bankrolled the series) has Kishore, Sheela Rajkumar, Bala Hasan and Vela Ramamoorthy. When the protagonist tames the bull of his ladylove using deceit, it triggers the already existing animosity between two families.
