The anticipation for Superman is massive, as it marks the beginning of the live-action world of the DCU, shaped by James Gunn and Peter Safran. Additionally, this is the first film directed by James Gunn since he took the helm of DC Studios, making the stakes incredibly high. For months, Gunn has been diligently working on the project, while also keeping fans engaged with updates. After addressing countless rumors, sharing details about comic inspirations, and teasing first looks, Gunn is finally ready to unveil more about the movie. In his latest post, he confirmed that Krypto the Superdog will be making his live-action debut—and even shared an adorable first look.

James Gunn Shares New Superman Teaser

While much about Superman remains under wraps, some things are already known: the film stars David Corenswet, Rachel Brosnahan, Milly Alcock, Nicholas Hoult, Nathan Fillion, and other notable actors. However, details beyond the cast have been scarce, especially since this isn't another origin story for the Kryptonian hero. But now, to celebrate Adopt a Shelter Dog Month, James Gunn has shared the first look at Krypto, Superman’s loyal canine companion.

In the teaser, Superman, played by David Corenswet, is seen sitting in space with Krypto as they gaze at Earth. Gunn wrote, “Krypto arrives on screens in Superman this summer. Krypto was inspired by our dog Ozu, who we adopted shortly after I started writing Superman. Ozu, who came from a hoarding situation with 60 other dogs and had never known human beings, was problematic to say the least.”

He continued, “He immediately came in and destroyed our home—our shoes, our furniture—he even ate my laptop. It took a long time before he would even let us touch him. I remember thinking, ‘Gosh, how difficult would life be if Ozu had superpowers?’ And thus, Krypto came into the script and changed the shape of the story as Ozu was changing my life. What better time to debut the not-so-good-good-boy Krypto than #AdoptAShelterDog month. Btw, Ozu today is, fairly often, a very good boy. #Superman”

Who is Krypto the Superdog?

Krypto the Superdog has been a significant part of the Superman lore. He made his debut in Adventure Comics #210 in 1955 and has been a fan favorite for many comic book enthusiasts. Despite his popularity, no filmmaker or studio has ever brought him into the live-action realm—until now. James Gunn is changing that, and Krypto is set to bring his charm to the upcoming Superman film. His adventures will no doubt captivate audiences, and fans are sure to fall in love with the character.

About Superman

What we know so far is that Superman will not be another origin story for Clark Kent. Instead, the film will explore a young Clark Kent (aka Kal-El) as he navigates his Kryptonian heritage while living a normal life as an up-and-coming reporter at The Daily Planet. He resides in Smallville, Kansas, with his adoptive family. The movie will also feature Lex Luthor as the villain, played by Nicholas Hoult, who, according to James Gunn, will have a significant role in the story.

Superman is set to hit theaters on July 11, 2025. Stay tuned to OTTplay for more updates on this and everything else from the world of streaming and films.
