Allu Arjun's Pushpa 2 is one of the biggest hits in Indian cinema and is nearing the end of its theatrical run. Directed by Sukumar, the film has raked in nearly Rs 1850 crore at the box office. However, ever since its release, debates have emerged over the portrayal of a sandalwood smuggler in such a glorified manner.
The controversy intensified when Allu Arjun received the National Award for Best Actor for his role in Pushpa. This sparked widespread discussion about the government recognizing an actor portraying a character who promotes sandalwood smuggling. When Pushpa 2 was released, these criticisms escalated further, with remarks coming even from within the Telugu film industry. Some critics argue that today's heroes are playing roles that negatively influence society.
Sukumar, the film's director, has now responded to these criticisms for the first time. He stated that his films are created purely for entertainment and are not intended to provoke or promote criminal behavior. "Calling my film anti-national or accusing it of provoking youth is the most troubling statement anyone can make against me. I create films to entertain audiences, and if my three-hour film keeps people in theaters, then crime rates will actually go down," Sukumar said.
In Pushpa, Allu Arjun plays a sandalwood smuggler who rises from rags to riches, creating a massive sensation among audiences. Sukumar is known for crafting films with unique storylines, often featuring protagonists with negative traits. This approach has resonated with the masses, though it has also drawn criticism from those who feel such portrayals encourage youth to imitate questionable behavior.
Sukumar has firmly rejected these accusations, reiterating that his films are meant for entertainment and should not be taken too seriously. Looking ahead, he is set to direct a major project with Ram Charan, which will be produced on a massive scale and is expected to go on floors by the end of this year. Stay tuned for more updates.
