Sudha Kongara established herself as one of the most sought-after filmmakers in the South film industry, with back-to-back acclaimed movies. The writer-director earned several awards and accolades for her 2020-released autobiographical drama Soorarai Pottru, which featured Suriya in the lead role.
In the recently aired Galatta Plus Tamil Roundtable 2023, Sudha Kongara extensively spoke about the importance of getting the casting right. The director revealed that she prefers casting the right actors for every role, irrespective of the stardom.
Sudha Kongara opens up about casting Suriya and R Madhavan
The acclaimed filmmaker, who opened up about getting the casting right, admitted that there is a need to cast a bankable actor when the scale is higher for a movie. However, Sudha Kongara stated that when she feels an actor is perfect for a role, she just proceeds and cast them. For the filmmaker, who is apt for a character is the most important factor.
According to Sudha Kongara, she was not considering many actors for the lead roles in her acclaimed feature films Soorarai Pottru and Irudhi Suttru, as not many actors can pull off such roles. The director chose the best from the options available to her and feels both Suriya and R Madhavan were just perfect for the lead roles in those films.
Sudha Kongara on working with new talents
In her chat with Galatta Plus, Sudha Kongara added that she would love to work with new talents, in subjects that are made on a relatively smaller scale. The director revealed that it was easier to get the casting done for her OTT outings including Thangam from Paava Kadhaigal or Putham Pudhu Kaalai, as it was the pandemic period. However, things are now getting changed in the OTT space as well, as the platforms now demand more commercially viable stars and subjects.

Sudha Kongara’s upcoming projects
The director recently wrapped up the shooting of the Hindi remake of Soorarai Pottru, which stars Akshay Kumar and Radhika Madan in the lead roles. Sudha Kongara is set to kickstart the shooting of her next outing with Suriya, which has been tentatively titled Suriya 43, by mid-December. The project also stars Dulquer Salmaan, Nazriya Nazim Fahadh, and Vijay Varma in the pivotal roles.
