Television and the streaming space are some of the most experimental places in the world of cinema. Throughout the years, we have seen many shows trying their hands at multiple genres and concepts, from friends navigating through life to a life-risking game show that turns out to be a nightmare, fantasy dramas with dragons, witches, and many more mystical things, and more. But what always fascinates is when some of them transcend their genre enter a new territory completely, and then successfully come back. It is not easy, and when the other genre it enters is comedy, things get even tougher. But some shows have done that so skillfully that you will have the best time watching them.
Remember every time Pablo in Narcos was around his family and cracked the meanest and funniest one-liners, or in Breaking Bad, every dark and below-the-belt comment from Jesse Pinkman has a straight-faced, hilarious comeback from Walter White, and these things continued for the entire showtime as an undertone layer. We are exactly talking about that. Only a few projects that span seasons can manage to do it, and it is certainly not an easy job and must be appreciated for the very effort where even the backdrop is decorated so well in the execution.
So today, as we sit back and relax as the weekend hits, here’s a reminder for you that these shows exist, and there is no harm in revisiting them. So below is a list of six shows that managed to crack that comedy undertone even with a serious drama subject. Read on and watch them with a new lens now.
Cast: Brian Cox, Jeremy Strong, Sarah Snook, Kieran Culkin, and ensemble.
Streaming On: Jio Cinema.
If you aren’t aware, Succession is made by a man who has created some iconic comedy content. So if you did observe the underlying humor in Succession that was subtle but so impactful, credit to Jesse Armstrong who created Four Lions and the sitcom Peep Show. Succession is full of awkward humor and smart cringe placed all over it. Be it the constant quarrels between the Roy siblings or Brian Cox throwing a pun with his straight face.
Cast: Bob Odenkirk, Rhea Seehorn, Jonathan Banks, and ensemble.
Streaming On: Netflix.
Bob Odenkirk, before he became the stellar Jimmy in Better Call Saul, was actually a name associated with the comedy genre in movies. But as soon as Bob joined the hit TV show, he made sure that his comedy status remained intact but got darker this time. The dark humor of Jimmy when he is always being pressured by something or the other around him. Better Call Saul had a very interesting humor ratio, and it took the baton from Breaking Bad and gave it new heights.
Cast: James Gandolfini, Drea de Matteo, Michael Imperioli, and ensemble.
Streaming On: NA.
The world of organized crime when blended with a sitcom vibe, many things that look robust in the world of criminals will look funny. So when a man who is seeking psychiatric help after being mentally unstable for a while, The Sopranos is funny even in the structure that it follows because every gory murder is followed by a hilarious twist in the end and you will be surprised at how the creators maintain the balance so well that the show remains a crime drama.

Stranger Things is now one of the most anticipated shows on the internet. As it now moves towards the fifth and final season, one cannot ignore the humor that is in the show. Be it Dustin’s clumsy antics, or every time there is some weird thing that happens around Hopper. Stranger Things is an interesting show that gets the thrills and humor blend right and the Duffer Brothers should be credited for the same.
Cast: Billy Bob Thornton, Martin Freeman, Allison Tolman, Bob Odenkirk, and ensemble.

Fargo is a very interesting show because every single season has a different cast and every season has a different kind of humor. While the competition is always between the seasons as to which one’s funnier, none can touch the brilliance of season one and a whole lot of credit goes to Martin Freeman and Billy Bob Thornton who were hilarious together.
Cast: Cillian Murphy, Paul Anderson, Tom Hardy, and an ensemble.
Streaming On: Netflix.
Peaky Blinders is an interesting show that is written so well as the problems that the show presents are actually normal for the era it is set in. The men in the show represent toxic masculinity problems and every time they are shown the ground, the underlined humor that the moments come with is very interesting.
