Subhash Ghai is one of the most celebrated filmmakers of Bollywood, having made hit films like Kalicharan, Hero, Ram Lakhan, Pardes, Taal and many more. While he has not been actively making films in recent times, the filmmaker spoke about the present condition of the Indian film industry and the reasons behind its downfall.
Subhash Ghai on the poor performances of films
Commenting on the talent of the people employed in the entertainment industry in an interview with Hindustan Times, Ghai said that there isn’t enough talent to meet the growing demands of the country, which is why mediocre people are being hired to do the job. “It’s our misconception that we have enough talented people, and that is why most films today are not working. And when I talk about talent, it includes everyone who runs the entertainment business: from director, content head, actors, editors, and technicians,” he said.

Speaking about the box office collection of non-successful films, the veteran filmmaker said that investors only want profits, and they are ready to put money on anyone and everyone who has the skill to make money. Ghai added that when the profits are not returned to the investors, they go back to the makers who they know will bring business.
Speaking about the credibility and capabilities of people, the filmmaker said that most do not even have proper knowledge of the job that they are doing. “Aapko writer banna hai, par aapne Rabindranath Tagore nahi padha... Shakespeare nahi padha (You want to be a writer, but you have never read Rabindranath Tagore or Shakespeare). So how do you expect to deliver?” Ghai concluded.
Khalnayak’s 30th anniversary
One of Ghai’s most celebrated films is Khalnayak, starring Sanjay Dutt, Madhuri Dixit and Jackie Shroff. And the makers recently marked its 30th anniversary. On the occasion, the cast and crew of the film got together to attend an event with the media in which Ghai teased Sanjay using Madhuri’s name, leaving the actor embarrassed. To the unversed, Sanjay and Madhuri were rumoured to be in a relationship during the shooting of Khalnayak, but apparently had a fallout after Sanjay’s arrest in 1993 in the Mumbai bomb blast case.
