Stree 2 vs Khel Khel Mein vs Vedaa Box Office Clash Day 1: For over a month, we have been discussing and anticipating the day we are on today. We sit exactly a day after the release of three big films that clashed at the box office in the Hindi circuit, marking a return to healthy box office battles. Stree 2, Khel Khel Mein, and Vedaa all released on Independence Day, and each had massive stars and high expectations. Shraddha Kapoor and Rajkummar Rao led the sequel to their 2018 horror-comedy, while Akshay Kumar headlined Khel Khel Mein. Vedaa, starring John Abraham and Sharvari, is a serious action drama. As expected, one film has emerged as the clear winner, with no competition in sight.
Stree 2 has surpassed the opening day collection of its predecessor and even outperformed Kalki 2898 AD. The film opened with over Rs 50 crore on day one, reaching a major milestone. Meanwhile, Khel Khel Mein had the lowest collection of the three, keeping Akshay Kumar’s recent string of flops alive, which is concerning. John Abraham’s Vedaa is faring better but still trails behind Stree 2. Here's a breakdown of the box office battle.
Stree 2 has become a clear winner, with impressive growth that few films achieve. The film, which opened on August 15, also had a night of paid previews on Wednesday. Before its official release, the movie earned Rs 20 crore from advance bookings. The paid previews added Rs 8.35 crore. By the end of day one, the total collection was Rs 54.35 crore, setting and breaking records. The Shraddha Kapoor and Rajkummar Rao-starrer benefitted from paid previews.
Khel Khel Mein features a massive ensemble cast, including Akshay Kumar, Taapsee Pannu, Ammy Virk, and Aditya Seal, and tells a story about marriages with a comedic twist. Although many had doubts about the material, the film was well-received by critics. However, this positive reception has yet to translate into significant box office numbers. On day one, the film earned Rs 5 crore, a very low figure compared to Stree 2. The only hope for the Kumar-starrer is strong word of mouth, which it desperately needs to build going forward.
John Abraham’s Vedaa is now competing with Khel Khel Mein, as Stree 2 dominates the box office without any real competition. Vedaa, a serious action drama led by Sharvari alongside John, managed to earn Rs 6.52 crore on day one. This puts it ahead of Khel Khel Mein, indicating there is an audience for it. Like the Akshay-starrer, Vedaa also needs strong word of mouth to sustain its box office run.
Stree 2 is clearly the winner among the three films, heading towards a blockbuster opening weekend. All three movies have benefitted from a long weekend, releasing on a Thursday and coinciding with Independence Day. With more holidays ahead, the game could change for Vedaa and Khel Khel Mein if they manage to attract audiences through positive word of mouth. However, it’s unlikely they will catch up to the Shraddha Kapoor and Rajkummar Rao-starrer at this point.
