Kurup, the crime thriller about the life of noted fugitive Sukumara Kurup, which has Dulquer Salmaan in the title role, is set to come to Netflix soon. Earlier today, the streaming giant dropped a teaser about the film’s forthcoming arrival on the platform, without a date, though. But given that the announcement comes a month after the film’s theatrical release, it would be safe to assume that it is not far off. Reports online suggest that the film could hit Netflix on December 21, to build traffic and momentum in the run-up to the release of Tovino Thomas’ superhero flick, Minnal Murali, on Christmas eve.
Kurup, which opened in theatres on November 12, was apparently slated to get a straight-to-OTT release, but the producers nixed the multi-crore deal at the behest of leading man Dulquer’s father, superstar Mammootty, in favour of a theatrical release. The news about an OTT deal had gained credence earlier this year, given that theatres in Kerala were among the last to reopen owing to the pandemic and because many other star-vehicles opted for that route. The announcement of a theatre release came as late as October 23, but the decision worked for the makers, with the film opening to great critical and audience feedback, in all of the five languages that it hit movie halls. The film had opened with a massive 1,500+ screens to its credit.
For the uninitiated, who are yet to see the film in any of the languages, Sukumara Kurup is one of the most-wanted fugitives, who faked his own death for monetary gain. The narrative of the film follows a journal of a cop who relentlessly pursued the criminal mastermind, albeit in vain.
Kurup also stars Indrajith Sukumaran, Sobhita Dhulipala, Sunny Wayne, Bharath Srinivasan, Shine Tom Chacko and Surabhi Lakshmi.
