This week we have a slew of new arrivals on streaming platforms. However, a devastating love story spanning continents, a larger-scale action adventure, a high-octane courtroom drama and hilarious sci-fi comedy entertainers must be on your watchlist this weekend.
In the third edition of Stream Smart, we have listed the top four new entries into the OTT space that must not be missed.
Past Lives
South Korean-Canadian director Celine Song offers a devastating tale of romance in Past Live. Deeply rooted in Korean culture and lifestyle, the film centres on the unconsummated romance between two childhood sweethearts. Nora, played by a wonderful Greta Lee, moves to the United States from Seoul, driven by her family's working-class aspirations for the American dream. In the process, she is forced to leave behind her friend Hae Sung, an excellent Teo Yoo back in her home country. 12 years later the two childhood friends reconnect via the internet and rekindle their romance. But, their relationship never achieves a satisfying ending as the years of separation have fundamentally changed who they are. Nora and Hae are deeply and madly in love with each other. But, their true love is not powerful enough to bridge the many gulfs between the two stemming from differences in worldviews, aspirations, and lifestyles. On the surface, it may seem nothing much is happening in the narrative. Just pay a little more attention, you can see the tragedy. And a special shout out to John Magaro for his compelling performance as he amazingly captures the awkwardness of Aruthr's predicament.
Past Lives will stream on Lionsgate Play and OTTplay Premium starting October 13.
Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One
Hollywood superstar Tom Cruise moved mountains to bring the seventh instalment in the Mission: Impossible film series to life. The production of the movie began as the world was still reeling under the devastation caused by the Covid-19 outbreak. As the pandemic posed a serious threat to the future of cinema, Tom Cruise made it his personal mission to prove the naysayers wrong. He implemented stringent safety measures, showcasing to the world how a large-scale movie could be made even during a pandemic. While the movie made profits at the box office, it still fell short of the expectations. Touted as a sequel to Mission: Impossible – Fallout (2018), this movie was helmed by Christopher McQuarrie.
Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One is available for rent on Prime Video.
The Burial
Who doesn't like a good courtroom drama? Especially, when it's infused with Jamie Foxx's infectious charm. The Burial presents a classic David and Goliath narrative. A multi-million-dollar corporate giant tries to take over the life's work of a small business owner named Jeremiah O'Keefe, played by Tommy Lee Jones. However, Jeremiah vows to protect his funeral home business and risks everything in the process. And he enlists the lawyering services of Jamie Foxx's Willie E. Gary to sue the superior rival. Thus begins the journey of a story that once again proves the age-old adage: It's not the size of the dog in the fight, but the size of the fight in the dog that matters.
The Burial debuts on Amazon Prime Video on October 13.
Mark Antony
If Mark Antony had failed to click with the masses, it would have likely ended the career of young filmmaker Adhik Ravichandran. Faced with a career limited to low-budget adult comedies and a string of commercial failures, Adhik needed a lifeline to stay afloat in the industry. And he came up with Mark Antony, a genre-bending sci-fi movie that sort of pays an ode to the 1980s Tamil cinema. Starring Vishal and SJ Suryah in the lead roles, this comedy-drama defied all expectations and became one of the biggest success stories of 2023.
Mark Antony will arrive on Amazon Prime Video on October 13.
