Srinagara Kitty and Rachita Ram’s Sanju Weds Geetha 2 sets new release date

Sanju Weds Geetha 2, the new romantic drama by director Nagashekar, featuring Srinagara Kitty and Rachita Ram in the lead, was meant to be one of the Sankranti releases from Kannada cinema, along with Choo Mantar and Nimma Vasthugalige Neeve Javaabdaararu on January 10. But a last-minute legal issue put the brakes on that plan and the film’s release had to be postponed indefinitely. It’s now back on track and the team has announced a new release plan. Sanju Weds Geetha 2 will now hit theatres on January 17.

The reason for Sanju Weds Geetha 2's postponement

Addressing the media about what transpired, Nagashekar explains that the film’s release had to be withheld following a stay from the Hyderabad city civil court. One of the producers of Nagashekar’s earlier Telugu film Gurthunda Seethakalam had filed the injunction under the impression that Sanju Weds Geetha 2 was a Nagashekar production.

According to an agreement with the producer of Gurthunda Seethakalam, Nagashekar was to make another film for the former, or repay him dues to the tune of 7 crores from any other production. The producer assumed that Sanju Weds Geetha 2 was produced by Nagashekar and filed the suit to recover his money. However, once it was established that Nagashekar is only the writer and director, while Chalavadi Kumar is the producer, the injunction was lifted, facilitating the release of the film.

Nagashekar and his team allege that the injunction on the film was a calculated move to benefit a Telugu film, as the screens allotted to Sanju Weds Geetha, went to the Telugu movie eventually.

Sanju Weds Geetha 2, meanwhile, is not a sequel of the 2011 hit Sanju Weds Geetha, as clarified by Nagashekar. Kitty’s character, though, is Sanju, and hence the use of the title. The film, a romantic drama, also explores the sericulture business and the struggle that silk farmers have in getting the right price for their product.
