Squid Game is returning with its second season pretty soon, but do you know that the Netflix show was not even supposed to be a trilogy? The creator Hwang Dong-hyuk shared that he had no plans to return after the first season, and for a good reason. So, what changed? He delves into it during a recent interaction...
Dong-hyuk points out the fact that having sequels to popular shows is not a common practice in Korea. It is why some classic K-Dramas remain untouched (as they should be). Moreover, the first season was stressful to watch but it was more stressful making the show, to the point that Dong-hyuk even lost many teeth. "I didn't have any plans or thoughts about there being further seasons," the creator told Entertainment Weekly.

Upon its release, Squid Game became a global phenomenon. The impact of the show was humongous, and it even won Emmy! Thus, even if Squid Game is incredibly demanding, the critical and viewers' acclaim forced Dong-hyuk to work on more seasons even when he lacked the confidence to do so. It is to be noted that he is the writer, director and creator of the franchise.
Even though he was almost sure of dropping the idea for more seasons, Dong-hyuk did vaguely think about what the second installment would be like if ever made. When the time actually came, he revisited the very idea and took it further. That sets the base for season 2.
He did mention that Gi-hun's story is what would be explored next. Back when season 1 released, the fans were excited to find out more about him. He called it his mission to tell that tale to the viewers.
With season 3, the maker wishes to give the viewers full closure. Thus, he decided to put an end to the series with the third season, which is scheduled for 2025 release.
Squid Game season 2 will be out on Netflix on December 26. The show stars Lee Jung-jae, Lee Byung-hun, Wi Ha-jun, and Gong Yoo. The newcomers include Yim Si-wan, Kang Ha-neul, Park Gyu-young, Lee Jin-uk, Park Sung-hoon, Yang Dong-geun, Kang Ae-sim, Lee David, Choi Seung-hyun, Roh Jae-won, Jo Yu-ri, and Won Ji-an.
