After close to three years of living in curiosity about whether Seong Gi-hun, played by Lee Jung-Jae, boarded that flight the other day or not, we are finally witnessing the release of Squid Game season 2. Starring Lee Jung-Jae as the lead yet again, the show takes off from the point it left us in season one and takes a three-year leap in the first few minutes. Gi-hun has dedicated all his resources to finding the recruiter, and destiny takes him back to the Squid Game. Here he realizes that the plan he plotted is one that the Front Man has always been ahead of, and he is again trapped into playing the deadly game where all he needs to do is stay alive. But that is not what he is here for. As the end unfolds, we see a tragic death, and it turns out there is a massive cliffhanger waiting for us.
Before you come at us, we discuss spoilers beyond this line, and you have been warned. Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) did not take that flight. He decided to stay back and find the root of Squid Game and finish it once and for all. But will that be easy? Clearly not, when there are two determined men doing the task on the ground and none has a breakthrough. In another part of this world, Jun-ho (Wi Ha-joon), the police officer, is busy finding the Island where his brother is running the show. When they join forces, there is finally a breakthrough, and now Gi-hun must go back into the game to stop it once and for all. But will his plan work? We are back in the games, and things are getting murkier than they ever were.
In the climax of Squid Game season 2, we see a group of players, including Myung-gi (Player 333), Dae-ho (Player 388), Gyeong-seok (Player 246), Hyun-ju (Player 120), Yong-sik (Player 007), Geum-ja (Player 149), Jung-bae (Player 390), and Jun-hee (Player 222), band behind Seong Gi-hun to fight against the bosses of the game and revolt by taking over the weapons from the soldiers. They are even successful in taking down some soldiers and snatching their weapons. But little does Gi-hun know that...
While they put up a very strong front, they don't know that the Player 001 tactics have been played once again, and it is none other than the Front Man. After fooling them as a player and killing some of his own men, the Front Man takes control and kills the members of the Gi-hun clan. Soon he finds Seong and his best friend. While he has all the reasons to kill Seong, he chooses to kill the best friend, creating a massive question for the future of the franchise. Will Gi-hun continue to be the rebel and want to end this game or quit after this tragic loss?
“The end of Season 2 is going to make people more curious about how Gi-hun will do in the game now that this traumatic event has happened to him,” Lee Jung-jae tells Tudum. “After what’s happened to his friend, can he still maintain his objective of saving the other people in the game?”
“It’s almost as if they’re betting against each other,” Lee Byung-hun continues. “The Front Man is asking questions like, ‘Do you really think you’re going to be able to end the game? Do you really think there’s hope in people? Do you think the world’s going to change?’ ”
