The world has been painted pink this week as Squid Game Season 2 dropped on Netflix, taking over all the mainstream discussions across the world. The show, which was one of the most awaited, is finally here, and fans are dissecting it and searching for hints about Season 3. While we are busy focusing on the third season, we seem to have forgotten that the Squid Game universe was set to grow beyond the Korean version and venture into the English domain. Legendary filmmaker David Fincher was reportedly in advanced talks with Netflix to create an American adaptation of the show. However, there had been no updates on the project for a long time—until now, when creator Hwang Dong-hyuk confirmed that the project is still on track.

David Fincher’s Squid Game English Adaptation Still on Track

Yes, you read that right. For the uninitiated, it was announced long ago that David Fincher was attached to something related to Squid Game. Later, reports suggested that he was developing an English-language film in the same domain. However, reports from October revealed that it is actually an English-language extension of Squid Game. It is said that this is not a film but a complete series being developed by the filmmaker for the streaming giant. Netflix and David Fincher have a deal that makes him one of the top talents under their umbrella.

Now, Squid Game creator Hwang Dong-hyuk has confirmed that the project with David Fincher is very much alive and progressing. This marks the first official confirmation of the show. Hwang, speaking to Screenrant, said, “I know Netflix has a plan. They are not going to throw this idea away... Maybe I’ll be in one of those projects as an advisor or co-creator. Who knows? But Season 3 is not going to be the end of the Squid Game universe.”

Other reports suggest that the David Fincher-created show will be the first English-language scripted series based on Squid Game. While Squid Game: The Challenge exists, it is unscripted. There are no details yet about what the scripted series will explore, but it is being called an extension of the main show. This could mean the game might enter the American world if that’s how the makers plan to expand the universe. Until there is an official announcement from either Fincher or Netflix, everything remains speculative.

Hwang Dong-hyuk on Squid Game Season 3

Confirming the possible summer or fall launch of Squid Game Season 3, Hwang Dong-hyuk also shared what to expect in a conversation with Variety. He said, “As for the storyline of the third season, Gi-hun, having lost everything—including his best friend—and with all of his attempts ending in failure, is now at a critical crossroads. What is he going to be like? What state will Gi-hun be in? What will he choose to do? Will he continue with the mission, give up, or persist? You’re going to meet our character Gi-hun at a very critical crossroads as we begin the third season. Gi-hun will not be the man he was in Season 2.”
