The anticipation around Squid Game is never going to fade down no matter the number of seasons, spin-offs, or prequels we are talking about. The show has become a cultural phenomenon that has brought a lot of people towards Korean content and introduced them to a new world altogether. The end of 2024 was all about Squid Game season 2 which aired on Netflix on December 26. The release took the world by storm as the viewership is enough to tell us the grand success of the show even when the reviews were mixed. One thing that the streamer confirmed was that season 3 of the show will be released in 2025. But one question that stays is what games will be played in the new season.

Squid Game 3 Theory

Yes, the world has been curious to know what direction Squid Game season 3 takes, especially after season 2 of the show ended with that tragedy. Now a new theory going viral on Instagram talks about what games might be played in season 3 of the hit Korean drama. The theory takes cues from the games represented on the wall that are shown in the show, which the scooper feels are hints at what games will be played in the next season of the show and the makers have purposely put them in the frames to tease the fans. The handle Just The Nobodys on Instagram shared an observation: they found only two games represented on the walls in Squid Game season 2. One shows several players hanging from the ceiling, which hints at Monkey Bars being played in the third season of the show. However, the next painting on the wall has a checkered pattern, which mostly symbolizes a Chess Board. There is a high possibility that the players will play a game of human chess in the third season of the show. 

Considering two people are needed to control the pieces during a game of chess on both sides, this could be the final game where Gi-hun goes against the Front Man, and they get into a heated game where the end means the death of one. Considering this is the final season for the show, this does feel like a possible end to the show.

Squid Game Season 3 Update

In case you were unaware, do not move away when the end credits roll after the finale of Squid Game season 2. There is a hidden mid-credit scene that takes us to season 3, and we will dissect that in this write-up below. What it actually does is it sets up season 3 of Squid Game and confirms that the show will return in the later months of 2025. Creator Hwang Dong-hyuk has now spoken about what to expect from the show and revealed that Seong Gi-hun will not be the same man you have seen in season 2 but a completely different person. Talking to Variety about when and what we should expect from Squid Game season 3, Hwang Dong-hyuk said, “At this point, anything I might say is going to be a spoiler, so I want to be cautious. But what I can say is, after Season 2 launches, I believe we will be announcing the launch date for Season 3 soon. I probably expect that to launch around summer or fall next year.”

Talking about the storyline of Squid Game season 3, he added, “But as for the storyline of the third season, Gi-hun having lost everything, including his best friend, and all of his attempts going to failure, it’s now, what is he going to be like? What state is Gi-hun going to be in? And what will he choose to do? Will he continue on with the mission? Is he going to give up or persist? And so you’re going to meet our character Gi-hun at a very critical crossroads as we begin the third season. Gi-hun will not be the man he was in Season 2.”
