The world of Spider-Man saw a massive elevation with Spider-Man: No Way Home, which was released in 2021 and took the world by storm. The movie, which brought the Spidey universe to the edge of the Multiverse, became one of the most beloved MCU films of all time. Packed with drama, cameos, and a dense plot, it set the stage for much of what has happened in the MCU since. Directed by Jon Watts and starring Tom Holland, No Way Home turned out to be a box office smash in no time. While the cameos were a major highlight, one of the biggest surprises was the return of Charlie Cox as Daredevil, a moment that none of us were prepared for. However, did you know that there was also an Easter Egg referencing Ben Affleck's Daredevil?

The Ben Affleck Daredevil Easter Egg

If your memory needs a refresher, before Ben Affleck joined the DCEU as Batman (aka "Batfleck") under Zack Snyder, he was already a Marvel superhero—though not under Disney. In 2003, under the banner of 20th Century Fox, Affleck played Matt Murdock in Daredevil, a vigilante drama directed by Mark Steven Johnson. The film also starred Jennifer Garner, Colin Farrell, and Jon Favreau (ring any bells?). Unfortunately, the 2003 film was a box office dud, and the future of the IP was left in limbo. As it turns out, even an Easter Egg referencing that film was cut from Spider-Man: No Way Home.

If you haven’t pieced it together yet, Jon Favreau, who plays Happy Hogan in the MCU, also appeared in Spider-Man: No Way Home—and in the 2003 Daredevil film alongside Ben Affleck. When Favreau’s Happy Hogan met Charlie Cox’s Daredevil in the MCU, there was naturally a desire to include a fun nod to the previous Daredevil film, and they actually did, as revealed by Charlie Cox in an interview with PopVerse.

"In Spider-Man, I got to do a scene with Jon Favreau, who I love," Cox said. "He also plays Foggy in that film [Daredevil 2003]. I'm not sure if it made it into the movie in the end, but we tried to get a pun in, like a little Easter egg, where I ask him a question and Jon's character, Happy, says, 'Yeah, I'm a little foggy on that right now.' I don't know if it made it into the movie—I can't remember—but we played with it on the day, hoping people would pick up on it."

Now There's Daredevil: Born Again

While Ben Affleck’s future as Daredevil remains in the dark, with no light at the end of the tunnel, Charlie Cox’s Matt Murdock has received a massive revival. Cox’s Daredevil has already appeared in two MCU shows and will finally star in a standalone series titled Daredevil: Born Again. The show is set for release in March 2025 and is expected to be a game-changer for the MCU’s darker, street-level stories.
