The last two days have been educational for Marvel Cinematic Universe fans eagerly awaiting updates on upcoming MCU movies and shows. Kevin Feige, who is gearing up for the San Diego Comic-Con where he will take the stage on July 27, has been making some very exciting revelations about the upcoming projects. He has spoken about Avengers 5, Secret Wars, X-Men, and more. However, one project he has revealed a lot about is Spider-Man 4, the fourth film in Tom Holland’s standalone franchise and possibly the beginning of a new trilogy for the web-slinging superhero. Previously, there had only been rumors and nothing more about the film. But that has changed now, and Kevin Feige has revealed a lot, including Jon Watts’ exit.
In case you are uninitiated, Jon Watts is to the Marvel Cinematic Universe what Sam Raimi was to Sony’s Spider-Man trilogy starring Tobey Maguire. Watts, during his time with MCU, directed all three Spider-Man movies, including Homecoming, Far From Home, and No Way Home. The filmmaker has been regarded as one of the most successful MCU filmmakers, with a great winning streak. So, fans were convinced that when Spider-Man 4 enters production, it would be Jon in the director’s chair. But it changed when rumors suggested that the bosses were looking for a new director and Watts was no longer attached.
Turns out those weren't just rumors and there was indeed truth to them because the latest confirmation by Kevin Feige says that Jon Watts is no longer attached to Spider-Man 4 and a new director will take over his duties in the franchise. As per CinemaBlend, Kevin has confirmed that Jon Watts is busy with other projects that he is in charge of right now and cannot dedicate his time to the fourth Spidey movie in the immediate future. This means a new helmer is coming on board.
Kevin Feige said, “We love Jon. Jon did three of the best Spider-Man films ever for us. He's got lots of things going on now. So we'll probably be looking for somebody else, just because he's busy.” Jon Watts has a full schedule with Wolfs set to release this year. The movie stars George Clooney and Brad Pitt. The filmmaker will also hop onto the Star Wars universe later, where he is expected to direct some episodes of the upcoming Disney+ show Skeleton Crew.
The follow-up to Spider-Man: No Way Home is said to be dealing with Peter Parker's PTSD from losing everyone he loved and the fact that he doesn't have any friends now. It was later revealed that the makers have even zeroed in on a director and the work will begin soon. Interestingly, they are developing the movie with Sony, which recently had a tug-of-war with them over the plot and the release date of the film, reportedly.
In an interview with io9, Kevin Feige was asked for an update on Spider-Man 4, and he said, "Amy [Pascal] and I are working on it. We have writers who are going to be delivering us a draft relatively soon." While this makes it clear that it is still far from entering production, the work is on and that is enough confirmation for now.
