The world was not even remotely ready for the moment that brought back Tobey Maguire as Peter Parker in the cult superhero film Spider-Man: No Way Home. Even when we knew he was going to be in the film, we all screamed at the top of our voices when he entered. While his comeback has certainly created a lot of buzz and there is reportedly a future for him in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, there is also an entire Sony universe that should have welcomed him back by now. After wrapping up his trilogy in the 2000s, the reports were that Tobey would have a Spider-Man 4, but that never really happened. But did you know an Easter egg in Spider-Man 2 was once looked at as a joke but now can be used as a route for the fourth Maguire film to be made? Read on to know more about this exciting update.

The Ultimate Spider-Man 2 Easter Egg

Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy is considered one of the best superhero franchises. The second in the series is actually called the best Spidey film ever. This is the same film that was released back in 2004 and had Doctor Octopus as the main villain. Raimi was actually in a fun mood when he casually decided to drop an Easter egg that mentioned one of the most pivotal No Way Home characters, potentially paving the way for Spider-Man 4 to happen.

To clear up the confusion, in Spider-Man 2, J. Jonah Jameson and Hoffman, his assistant, are discussing possible names for Otto Octavius after he acquires the metallic limbs. They discuss many names, including Science Squid (thank God that didn't make it through), Doctor Octopus (which they first reject), and Doctor Strange. Yes, you read that right. When Hoffman suggests Doctor Strange, Jameson quickly says that's taken. This sent a wave of laughter across cinema halls back in the day but it makes so much sense today.

How Does This Make Sense?

If you remember the scene named Doctor Strange, it means Sam Raimi subtly indicated that Doctor Strange exists in the world of Tobey Maguire’s Peter Parker. This means we were looking at a future when we laughed at the joke back in the day. Now that Tobey has traveled ahead in time and understood who Doctor Strange is and what he is capable of in Spider-Man: No Way Home, it opens up a whole new story.

This possibility can be explored in Spider-Man 4, where Tobey Maguire possibly cannot handle the danger and seeks help from either Doctor Strange, Andrew Garfield, or Tom Holland. Sony needs to invest in the right films before the likes of Madame Web and Morbius lead to the audience losing hope.

Both Spider-Man: No Way Home and Spider-Man 2 are available on Sony LIV, and you can watch them with your OTTplay Premium subscription. Stay tuned to OTTplay for more information on this and everything else from the world of streaming and films.
