Director Bhadran’s 1995 Mohanlal-starrer Spadikam was a trendsetter in a lot of ways. It had Mohanlal in one of his most iconic roles – Aadu Thomas – and also in a large extent, helped to change the perception of actress Silk Smitha among the audience.
In a recent press meet, the filmmaker, who is now gearing up to release the 4K remastered version of the film, recounted an incident where a priest had initially denied him the request to shoot a portion of Spadikam in a church.
“When we were looking for a church, the priest there said that we can’t shoot there. I was taken aback because he said that he can’t let in Silk Smitha into the church,” said the director. When the filmmaker enquired further, the priest said that it would cause problems as the team would be shooting “some obscene scenes”.
“I asked him, ‘How can you say that?’… I told him that this is not such a movie and then narrated the film’s content. After listening to the content, he liked it and agreed for us to shoot at the church. There was an image about Silk Smitha that I could correct with this film,” said the director.

Silk Smitha played the role of Laila in the movie, which also has Nedumudi Venu, Thilakan and Urvashi. The 4K version of Spadikam is set to hit theatres on February 9, 2023.
About the new version, Bhadran said, “We have included a lot of shots that we couldn’t feature in the original. We have also tried to ensure that the movie has a different feel from the original – in terms of the background score. We haven’t changed the score per se, but there are some changes that people who have seen the original would notice.”
The director also said that the 4K version will be getting an OTT release, but only in 2024. Spadikam’s original version is available to stream on Disney+ Hotstar and MX Player.
