Sooryavansham 2: Did Sony Max confirm that sequel of Amitabh Bachchan’s cult film amid tug of war over rights?

Before there was streaming, there was satellite television, and the world was busy watching shows and films on it for decades. Of course, there were some absolute favorites that got the prime slots, and one that held the top bracket for decades is Sooryavansham. The 1999 movie, starring Amitabh Bachchan and Soundarya in the lead roles, has turned out to be one of the most iconic films on satellite television. But what if we told you that Sony Max has teased a sequel to the film in a new post that is now going viral on the internet? Well, it has indeed happened, and below is everything you need to know about it.

Is Sooryavansham 2 Happening?

Sooryavansham follows Heera, who fails to live up to the expectations of his father, Thakur Bhanupratap Singh, a powerful and respected man in his community. Despite all odds, Heera struggles to uphold his father’s pride.

As per the latest post from Sony Max on Instagram, Sooryavansham 2 is all set to release, and the channel has even confirmed the return of Heera. Not just that, but the post also confirms that a trailer release is due soon.

In the caption, the channel wrote: “Aapne ye aate hue nahi dekha hoga, par yeh aa raha hai. Kya is baar Bhanu Pratap Singh aur Heera Thakur karenge ek naye sire se shuruaat, ya padegi unke rishte mein daraar? Jaanne ke liye kijiye thoda sa intezaar! Aa raha hai #Sooryavansham2 sirf aur sirf Sony Max par!” There is no confirmation yet on whether Amitabh Bachchan will return for the project.

Sooryavansham To Re-release?

However, in a recent conversation with Bollywood Hungama, Manish Shah of Goldmine Telefilms revealed that they acquired the rights to the film in 2020. He said:

“Sony Entertainment Television holds the satellite rights of Sooryavansham till 2024 or 2025. Once the rights lapse, I’ll play it on my channel, Goldmines Bollywood. I am not selling the rights to SET MAX again.”

Manish further confirmed, “It’ll arrive on Goldmines in June 2025.” When asked about the chances of Sooryavansham re-releasing in theaters, Manish replied:“I don’t have its theatrical rights.”

When asked if he’d like to buy the theatrical rights, he explained: “Let’s see. Today, it’s crucial to market your film even while re-releasing it. And that marketing only comes from the heroes. Most of the re-releases that did well were either backed by the heroes very strongly. Otherwise, they don’t work. For Karan Arjun, Rakesh Roshan went all out and spoke about it. He’s a big figure, and that made a difference.”
