Sonakshi Sinha on Dahaad: I want roles with more substance; want to play stronger female characters, so my choices changed

Sonakshi Sinha, who plays a cop on the trail of a serial killer in her streaming debut Dahaad, calls the series a clutter-breaker. Zoya Akhtar and Reema Kagti are responsible for the upcoming Prime Video crime drama series. Kagti co-directs the eight-part series with Island City's Ruchika Oberoi.

In an interview with PTI, Sonakshi stated that when she met Zoya, she told her that she had begun turning down all film roles since nothing interested her enough to get out of bed and behave like that person for thirty, forty, or ninety days. Dahaad was an obvious choice, and she answered yes right away.

The series was a nice change of pace from the mundane offers the actor had been receiving. Anjali Bhaati seemed so formidable on paper. As an actor, the opportunity to take on a part like that was quite thrilling to her at the time. Over and over, the same suggestions were made to her.

Sonakshi claimed she had no fears regarding the channel. She had the idea for the show long before the OTT explosion that occurred during the pandemic. Before the epidemic, Zoya appeared in her life. The emergence of OTT services occurred considerably later. Earlier than that, she had already said yes. For Sonakshi, as an actor, it's all about the part, not the spotlight. Is it acceptable if she does it? Does she genuinely feel shaken up, like she has to be this character, whether it's an OTT show or a movie?

The actor plays a fiery officer in Dahaad who is tasked with unravelling the mystery behind the deaths of women who have been discovered in public restrooms. Sonakshi, who began her acting career in 2010 with the Salman Khan film Dabangg, explained that she used to be a restless performer but has since matured into someone who wants to represent strong women on screen.

She used to be a fidgety actor, and her goal was simply to keep busy. Sonakshi starred in so many films in her early years that by the time she completed a decade in the industry, she had been in over 30 films. The actor said that she worked like a madman, and the time eventually came when she started starring in films headlined by her, and that led her to taste blood.

Sonakshi is looking for meatier parts where she can portray empowered women. Because of this development, she shifted my priorities, and regardless of the result, the actor gained experience as an actor. She had a great time doing that and stated her desire to continue performing.

The Kalank actor has recently starred in films where she is the lead female character, such as the 2016 action feature Akira and the comedies Khandaani Shafakhana and Double XL. The actor said that the roles available to female performers in cinema have changed from that of the stereotypical heroine in male-led projects to that of the protagonist in their films.

Quite a few filmmakers are producing numerous films with female leads, and it's a nice change of pace. For so long, it has been precisely the opposite. Now more than ever, viewers expect to see a male protagonist or actor in a leading role, and people are getting there, referring to the target demographic.

The May 12 release date for Dahaad on Prime Video will feature performances from Vijay Varma, Gulshan Devaiah, and Sohum Shah. Executive producers Ritesh Sidhwani, Farhan Akhtar, Reema Kagti, and Zoya Akhtar work with Excel Media & Entertainment and Tiger Baby on the project.
